Stari Grad Plain (Starogradsko polje) Sara Popović, Aldo Čavić

Stari Grad Plain, a large, fertile plain in the central area of the island of Hvar, is a cultural landscape inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The Plain was given its geometric structure by Greek colonists, in the 4th century BC when they divided it into equal sized plots. The system of paths and terraced plots, still visible today, is the best-preserved Greek cadastre in the Mediterranean. All subsequent inhabitants of this area added marks of their own presence, thus creating a historically multi-layered cultural landscape of exceptional beauty that lives on today, marked by grape and olive cultures typical of the Mediterranean since ancient times. The Plain is, in fact, a living ancient land-scape in whose life rhythms we can recognize echoes of almost all historical periods from prehistoric times until the 20th century. Life, both in the Plain and from the Plain, although varying in intensity, has continued uninterrupted.
This book is the work of two authors who know the Plain from the inside: from a local perspective, since one was born on Hvar, and the other is an ar-chaeologist who lived and worked in this area for several years. The book was written with the intention of creating a friend and companion for everyone who wishes to become acquainted with this place of timeless beauty through its historical and annual alterations. Most visitors experience the Plain in the sum-mer and yet, as a living agricultural landscape, it changes throughout the year. Maybe this book will encourage people to visit and explore the Plain even in those parts of the year when the island shows its other face, unknown to sum-mer visitors. If the island and the Plain win them over even then, the authors will know that they have written the book that is a true friend of the Plain...
